Understanding the Menstrual Cycle Through Augmented Reality: A Step Toward Smarter, Safer Learning
At RiyalMedical, we are committed to reshaping how critical biological concepts are taught — especially those often neglected in traditional classroom environments. One such topic is the Menstrual Cycle, a fundamental part of human biology that deserves both accuracy and empathy in its delivery.
That’s why we developed an Augmented Reality-based learning application that visualizes the menstrual cycle in an interactive, immersive, and stigma-free way — specifically designed for school students, medical undergraduates, and digital biology labs.
Objective: Why We Built It
- 1. Break the taboo around menstruation education
- 2. Provide accurate anatomical and physiological demonstrations
- 3. Engage learners with 3D, animated visuals instead of 2D textbook diagrams
- 4. Help schools and colleges adopt NEP 2020-aligned experiential learning tools
Tools & Technologies Used:
XR (Extended Reality) allows users to interact with 3D medical environments in real time. With XR headsets like Meta Quest, HoloLens, and mobile-based AR tools, students can:
Component | Platform |
---|---|
3D Modeling & Animation | Blender |
AR Engine | Unity |
Marker-Based AR | Vuforia SDK |
User Interface | Unity Canvas UI |
Target Platform | Android (Expandable to iOS/WebAR) |
What the App Demonstrates
Through AR overlays, students can:
- 1. Visualize the entire 28-day menstrual cycle in 3D
- 2. Understand phases like:
- a. Menstrual Phase (Day 1–5)
- b. Follicular Phase (Day 1–13)
- c. Ovulation (Day 14)
- d. Luteal Phase (Day 15–28)
- 3. Observe real-time hormonal changes, ovary function, and uterine lining development
- 4. Learn symptoms and physiological effects using narration and UI pop-ups
Key Features:
- 1. AR Camera Overlay: Point at a marker and see 3D animations
- 2. Cycle Simulation Controls: “Slide” through cycle days
- 3. Voice Narration in English & Hindi
- 4. Curriculum Integration: Matches NCERT & MBBS foundation topics
- 5. Safe Space Design: Comfort-focused color schemes and UX
Future Plans
- 1. Add multi-language support (regional Indian languages)
- 2. Expand to Reproductive System series (Fertilization, Pregnancy, PCOS education)
- 3. Deploy on WebXR + Mobile + MR headsets
Join the Movement
At RiyalMedical, we believe that technology can humanize biology. By using Augmented Reality to teach sensitive but vital topics like menstruation, we are not just educating minds — we’re shaping a more informed, inclusive, and curious generation.
